Weekly Wisby 11: TRIPLE YOUR FANBASE IN 7 DAYS MASTERCLASS

As a community manager, I believe my biggest asset is realizing I’m still failing. Start this week our community was 6 large. Now, you have to understand I hold no animosity towards the number 6; in fact, for a couple of nobodies that have posted some random art in a couple of servers that didn’t ask for it, we’re doing pretty good! No, the real problem I have with the number 6 is that I have no idea how to increase it.

Though my knowledge on the subject is lacking, thankfully the internet has plenty of tips, tricks, guides, tutorials and courses on how YOU can UNLOCK YOUR AWARENESS or some hogwash. This not being my first rodeo, I know to take any sales pitches and unrealistically positive advice with a grain of salt. That being said, taking out some company-time to fill up on fan-attraction knowledge was I believe the best thing I could’ve did!

Brought to you by the same guy that made “1000 Fans in 90 Days”. I’m not kidding, that’s literally one of his other videos.

Some of the information I picked up on were simply helpful tricks, for example how to make your discord server findable online. Then there is a clear pattern to be noticed, which is that: in order to be heard, you gotta start listening. When nobody knows your name, the only people who are gonna join your discord servers are your friends. So go make a lot of friends! Participate in servers, ask questions, join events, and try to enjoy yourself!

Honestly I would love that. I’m always focusing so much on my work… because I love it!... but I tend to neglect others and what they are working on. Checking in on them once in a while, as part of my job: it just might be the perfect crime.

Oeh, oeh, this is supersmall, but I wanted to share it! One of our goals is building a website for our game. The image below is some website concept art:

Looks good, but the problem with it is that, if you were to scroll down, it would look a little weird. Well get this; instead of scrolling down and up, what if I told you… the site scrolls left and right. Cool no? Since our game scrolls horizontally as well, I think it’s a nice touch. Let me know what you think!

Of course, my week would not be complete if I didn’t sneak in some Unity development. Now look at this!

Yeeaaah baby, that’s Celestial Cycles for ya! It still jumps from color to color, but once I’m done with this puppy we’ll have a fully configurable day-night system that can really make our game gorgeous!

With some little extra effort, I also made a small demo for what’s to come: a slider that lets you change the time in the Editor!

Once this is done I should have a really powerful system on my hands to show you!

The last few blogs I’ve been mentioning Break It stuff, and nothing but Break It stuff. You would be forgiven for thinking that that’s the only thing this blog would be talking about from now on. But I do have another course, namely C++ programming. Then why have I not been talking about that here? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell… I kindaaa… forgot about it?! For 2 weeks straight now I’ve focused so much time and energy on the game that my C++ courses have fallen into decay. That’s what I get for being passionate, expect next week to be a bit more laid back on the Break It-side.

Lastly I contacted Adam, the project coordinator himself, to do weekly sessions talking about community management. Guidance is clearly one of the things I need. This Wednesday was super nice: we basically laughed about how we both have no idea what we’re doing and then came up with the idea of doing weekly discord Events. This gives the channel a hook, consistency, and me something to give to the people even when there is nothing going on. And look!

This Sunday I’m going to stream Night in the Woods, a game close to ours, and with some outgoing posts conveying the occurrence… we went from 6 people, to 16 people! WOOHOO! Hopefully the stream goes well and I can keep the momentum going… but for now, we celebrate!

Comments

  1. Great achievement! Going up from 6 to 16 is more than a 100% increase. You make me jealous.
Your blog demonstrates a very entrepreneurial attitude which is great. You do not get blocked by setbacks but simply find different approaches to succeed. I love it!
